A Placer County inmate search involves using tools to find publicly available information about persons incarcerated in any of the jails or prisons in the county. Any resident of Placer County may perform an inmate search, and this can be done for various reasons. Person who typically do inmate searches are law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, family members, private investigators, and the press.

Inmate data are classified as Placer County public records and are obtainable by interested members of the public. The common reasons people lookup Placer County inmates are:

Placer County Prison System

The Placer County prison system comprises two main jail facilities: the South Placer Jail and the Auburn Main Jail. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office oversees all operations carried out in both facilities.

The Auburn Main Jail has three medium-security dorms and one maximum-security dorm module. Two of the three medium-security dorms have a capacity of 92 inmates each and the third has a 44-inmate capacity. The maximum-security module has a capacity of 32 inmates. This jail previously had a minimum-security facility with a total capacity of 160 inmates, making the maximum containment capacity of the Auburn Main Jail add up to 646 inmates.

In 2014, the minimum-security facility was closed and its inmates moved to the South Placer jail. This left the Auburn Main Jail with a total capacity of 486 inmates. The inmate housing units of the Auburn Jail operate using the direct supervision style.

The South Placer Jail is located at the Santucci Justice Center, with the first phase of its construction completed in 2012. The building covers an estimated area of 200,000 square feet and houses about 420 inmates. Plans are in progress to increase the inmate capacity of the South Placer Jail facility to 980 inmates, and its area to 319,000 square feet. The South Placer County Jail Staff comprises correctional officers, deputy sheriffs, medical and programs personnel, and support service staff.

How to Find an Inmate in Placer County

Members of the public can find anyone incarcerated in any of the county jails when they visit service kiosks at the jails or the Sheriff’s Office. Persons may also fill out the Public Records Request form on the Placer County Sheriff’s Office website to request copies of inmate records. For remote access, requesters may look up PDF files downloadable on the Corrections Department Website for inmate information.

How Does a Placer County Inmate Search Work?

The California Public Records Act provides the right for members of the public to access records and other information generated and maintained by public offices. As such, the office of the Placer County Sheriff must make all non-exempt inmate records available for public inspection and copying.

The Sheriff’s Office, however, reserves the right to redact certain portions of inmate records available to the public if the information they contain is deemed confidential. Information typically found during an inmate search includes an inmate’s name, jail ID, date of birth, expected release date, criminal history, address, gender, and mugshot.

Where to Find a Placer County Inmate Locator

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office maintains a website that contains PDF files of custody, booking, and release reports. Inmates can be found in the Custody Report. People can also request inmate records when they fill out and submit the Placer County Public Records Request form.

Many other websites owned by the government, as well as private service providers, can be used to locate an inmate held in any of the jails in Placer County and also find information about them. To search for an inmate, an inquirer will be required to provide an inmate’s name or jail ID number.

While the Sheriff’s office provides inmate information on its website free of charge, many third-party sites usually charge a fee for inmate searches. This fee varies depending on various factors such as the number of pages a person wishes to copy and the number of searches made.

How to Send Jail Mail in Placer County

Friends and family members can send mail to persons held in any of the two jail facilities in Placer County. Senders are advised to include an inmate’s name and jail ID number while addressing inmate mail. They must also print their return address at the top left corner of the envelope.

All mail sent to inmates in Placer County jails is regulated by instructions contained in an Inmate Rule Book. Some rules are:

  1. Inmates are allowed to possess no more than ten books, newspapers, or magazines
  2. All books sent to inmates must be approved by the jail commandant for correspondence
  3. An officer may withhold certain mail from an inmate if it contains prohibited content and a written notice shall be given to the inmate regarding the reason for the action
  4. Inmates are only allowed to receive funds sent through money orders, cashier’s checks from American banks, and government checks
  5. Personal checks are not accepted
  6. Funds received through cashier’s checks and money orders must not exceed $100 while those received through government checks can be any amount
  7. Letters and publications with contents deemed to be affiliated with gangs are returned to the center
  8. Materials written in code are not accepted
  9. Hardcover books are not allowed
  10. Publications depicting or related to weapons, nudity, harmful sexual conduct, violence, and racism are not permitted
  11. All unacceptable mail will be returned to the sender or placed in an inmate’s property bag.
